Baby Oedipus and the Sheppard
Oedipus was the son of Lias, king of Thebes. Before Oedipus was born, Lias heard a prophecy stating that he would be killed be his own son. When Oedipus was born, Lias had the baby’s ankles tied together and exposed him on a mount to die. Lucky for the prince, a Sheppard spotted the boy and raised him as a son. In some versions of the myth a servant passes the baby along to a Sheppard. These statues depict the baby Oedipus and the Sheppard.
Fun Fact: Oedipus’s name actually means “swollen foot”
