World of Mythology
Oedipus  &The Sphinx
In Greek mythology, the sphinx was a monstrous creature that was terrorizing Thebes. The Sphinx would stop if anyone could answer this riddle: “What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon and three at night?”
The hero, Oedipus, who walked with a cane due to a foot wound he suffered as a child, was able to figure out that the answer to the riddle was “A Man”
A man, according to Oedipus, crawled on four legs as a baby in the “morning” of his life, two legs as an adult in his prime, and then walked with a cane (for a total of three legs) as an old man in the “evening” of his life.
